WARM UP / COOL DOWN Warm up is critical for any kind of physical activity. It pre-heats the muscles and "primes the pump" for chemicals that trigger muscle contraction. Pre event massage consists of vigorous flushing and warming strokes with effects that last for hours. It's great before stretching. Cool down helps the body recover from activity. It allows the body to "idle" for a few minutes and get rid of cellular waste, especially lactic acid Post event massage consists of flushing and broadening strokes that feed oxygen to starved muscles. These techniques greatly speed recovery time, and reduce Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS. |
