 YOUR BODY MECHANIC

Soft tissue specialists, massage therapists can help repair and rehabilitate many types of medical conditions.

New York State is one of the most conservative when it comes to insurance and massage.  Fortunately this is changing.  A few years ago, Chiropractic care was not covered by insurance, now it is generally accepted.

Results for their money, is what insurance companies are looking for when treating a patient.

Unfortunately, many companies still don't recognize the value of massage, even though it is medically proven to get results.

Will my insurance pay? This depends on many factors, so the best answer is:

Ask your insurance provider.  Prepare your case to increase your chances of being covered.

  • Talk to your Massage Therapist.  Get information on your condition, types of treatment, and prognosis for healing.
  • Get a prescription from an MD or DC, specifying massage therapy
  • Get a diagnosis that focuses on "soft tissue" injury.  Ex: "Sprained ankle", instead of "Fractured ankle".
  • Talk to your claims adjuster.  Specify the reasons why you think massage is the best treatment for you.
  • Note especially if you have received other types of treatment (Physical therapy, nerve block, cortisone injection), and haven't felt any better.

Your claims adjuster is your advocate with the insurance company.  Remember, they want results for their money.  Most don't even know about massage as a viable medical treatment, and the great results it gets when other treatments have failed.

Education is the way to convince insurance companies and doctors that still don't recognize the benefits of massage.  What medical professional wouldn't want a safe, effective option to drugs and surgery?
