 PAIN AND SWELLING

Almost every medical problem, from a runny nose to a major muscle strain causes inflammation.

Inflammation, is a warning that something's wrong, either illness or damage. Some inflammation is necessary and normal, and helps the body heal and fight infection.

Imagine your smoke detector sounding in the middle of the night.  Would you take the batteries out and go back to bed, or would you check for smoke?

Medication shuts down the bodies alarm system.  Pain killers and anti-inflammatories mask the symptoms without stopping whatever is damaging the body.

More damage and re-injury is very common when over treating with medication.  The body can't feel the pain, so it can't protect the damaged site. See: Rotator Cuff Injury

 TREATMENT

Imagine standing in line at the grocery store.  Someone is poking you with their umbrella.  You begin to get sore, red, and irritated.  The correct response is to:

  • A. Take a painkiller
  • B. Get a cortisone injection
  • C. Have surgery
  • D. Yell "Stop poking me!"

Invasive treatment involves medications that numb the pain, but don't solve the problem.  Medications don't heal, they only make it easier to be sick.

Effective treatment involves removing the source of the irritation and letting the body heal itself.

Conservative treatment should always be your first choice.  If your health care provider won't let you even consider any option besides drugs and surgery -- FIRE THEM.
